Botox and Dysport are not the only substances that can remove wrinkles. Cosmetic plastic surgeons have a whole array of substances – like Restylane and Juvederm – that can fill deep facial folds and zap wrinkles quickly, without surgery.
Other areas of filler treatment include sagging facial flesh, thinning lips and even aging hands.
Here’s the low-down by category:
Hyaluronic Acid fillers. (Your cosmetic plastic surgeon will want to know if you have any allergies before using these.)
These fillers are the most popular and include Juvederm, Ultra Juvederm and Ultra Plus; they are all jells and are said to provide results for 12 months before being absorbed by the body.
Restylane and Perlane. These last around six months and are approved for middling to bad wrinkles and facial folds.
Side effects to fillers happen rarely but may include bruises, reddened faces and swelling.
Artefill is collagen filled with tiny, microspheres of a type plastic which is not absorbed by the body. Instead, collagen forms around the microspheres and plumps up the skin above. The manufacturer only says Artefill is “long lasting.” Unoficially, that is said to be around five years.
Synthetics facial fillers include Radiesse and Sculptra which work for about a year before reabsorption. Radiesse is not intended for lip augmentation, but for plumping up deep facial folds like the lines around the nose.
The somewhat similar Sculptra is FDA cleared for plumping up areas of facial loss like sagging cheeks. Sculptra is injected into deep muscles.
Fillers made from your own body: While the techniques are controversial in plastic surgery, some facial fillers are made from fat taken from a patient’s upper thigh, rear end or tummy, processed and then re-injected below areas of fine lines and facial creases to plump them up. That requires two surgical sites, one to take the fat and one for the injections.

Insider tips: don’t let costs be your only consideration for facial fillers and wrinkle removers. Some ultra cheap “Botox” treatments have been shown to be bogus, inert substances.
Likewise, other bargain basement facial filler procedures have been offered in hotel and motel rooms, private homes, Medi-spas and resorts. But all facial filler injections or wrinkle removing treatments should be done with sterile instruments in at least a doctor’s office or some other medical setting.
